Natural skincare products for pregnancy

Posted on 28 June 2016

If your pregnancy has spurred on a desire to implement more natural skincare products into your routine, you are most certainly not alone. While the jury is out on the effects of many mainstream beauty ingredients on your unborn baby, there is no escaping the fact that chemicals, parabens and fragrances aren't an ideal addition to your changing body (and your baby).

Thankfully, going natural with your beauty products does not need to mean giving in to a world of no shampoo and sub-standard cleanser. In fact, many natural beauty products today are just as effective (if not more fabulous) than their synthetic counterparts. Getting results, looking amazing and feeling (naturally) wonderful do not need to be mutually exclusive.

Here are our top skin (and hair) care picks for a safe, natural and beautiful pregnancy.

Cleanser
We can't go past REN for natural skincare that works. The British born brand uses the finest, 100% pure plant and mineral derived ingredients to nurture your skin. They use no chemical nasties, so you're in safe hands. We adore their Evercalm Gentle Cleansing Gel.

Serum
If you're feeling a little off balance and want the extra hit of some delicious skin benefits, sink yourself into Cedar & Stone's gorgeous Atlantis Serum. It's been created to assist in the management of blemish prone skin, and is rich in essential fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins from the oils of Baobab, Grapeseed and Marula. It also includes the pure, calming essential oils of Ylang Ylang and Lavender and is infused with the essence of Clear Quartz & Rose Quartz to help balance emotions ... Ah, perfect for the hormonal among us!

Moisturiser
Sooth your skin with Miranda Kerr's range of KORA Organics. Her Soothing Day & Night Cream for Face & Skin is a restorative daily moisturiser that contains Evening Primrose Oil, Pomegranate, Chamomile, Olive and Lavender. The result? Nourished and revitalised skin in a pure and natural way.

Body Lotion
It's an investment, but this nourishing body treatment oil by Dr Alkaitis is ridiculously effective. While we love it all over our bodies (particularly in the hopes of preventing stretch marks), it is equally as effective when used as a facial serum, so it's a hard working product. It is 100% active, and works by stimulating the skin's natural ability to repair itself. It uses a unique blend of organic cold pressed oils with herbs including Liquorice, Country Mallow and Turmeric plus a natural full spectrum vitamin E complex.

Shampoo & Conditioner
Vanessa Megan's range of haircare is as effective as it is luxurious. We love the tangerine shampoo, which as well as smelling delicious, cleanses the hair and scalp without stripping the natural oils or adding any product build up. It uses a combination of botanical ingredients including the pure essential oils of tangerine and geranium to stimulate the hair follicles and Vitamin B5 for strong healthy hair.

Hair Colour
Look for a salon that offers O&M colour. They were pioneers in challenging the artificial norms of professional haircare, with formulations that are both effective and gentle. They have removed harsh chemicals wherever possible, while including natural extracts and active minerals that deliver real benefits. Find a salon here

Nail Polish
Those flashing lights at the salon and UV rays of Shellac might not be holding the same pull factor now that you're pregnant. However, gorgeously manicured hands don't have to be impossible. We adore Butter's range of great colours, and they are completely non-toxic. Win.

Deodorant
If you're not already on to natural deodorant, make the switch - now! Traditional deodorants and anti-perspirants are full of pretty much everything you don't want on your body or in your blood stream. We can vouch for Earths Purities, and while your body might take a few weeks to adjust, stick with it, as the end result is well worth it.
